The Music Products Industry as Part of a Collegiate Music Industry Program’s Curriculum
By Andrew Surmani and Carl Anderson
This study examines the inclusion of the music products industry as part of an overall music business curriculum in collegiate music industry programs. Historically, most music industry curricula have focused heavily on topics such as recording, live performance, music publishing, music licensing, music and media, and artist management. While some of these traditional music fields have seen wide-sweeping changes in their business models in recent years, the music products industry has continued to be a relatively steady and significantly relevant part of the overall industry, with many job opportunities for music industry graduates. However, coursework reflecting this portion of the industry is often underrepresented or even completely absent from many curricula. This study defines the music products industry and its component parts. It further examines the curriculum of many collegiate music business programs as correlated with the employee candidate skills and knowledge needs of retailers and manufacturers of the music products industry through two research studies.concerning copyright. Topics: How to determine if a work is protected by copyright, The use of print music and lyrics, The use of audio, The use of video, Digital products and the Internet, Performance rights, Composing and arranging.
Travel in the Time of (and After) COVID
By Andrew Surmani
November 2021
When you ask adults about the most rewarding experiences from participation in a school ensemble music program, they invariably recount tales of tours and performances away from school. These include performances in the local town, at a rest home, music festival, or a trip to another community, state or country. For many directors, the thought of planning travel right now can be daunting. We are still in the throes of the worst pandemic in over a century; health concerns are high, budgets are tight, and the red tape to plan a tour with a school and district can be daunting. However, if we can all take a moment to think of all the rewards to students and school ensemble programs, one begins to see that the benefits far outweigh the hassles.
On the Road Again
By Andrew Surmani
November 2022
LAST YEAR IN TUNE LAUNCHED a first annual feature article on music travel with students, and as a follow up this year’s edition might be subtitled, “My, how have times changed.” We went with a more descriptive one. But, yes, in one respect, the environment for travel in general has changed dramatically in comparison to the
environment just a year ago. After more than two years of being locked down with severe and constantly changing restrictions on safety protocols and what we can and cannot
do in person, travel is more than just a possibility. We’re all yearning to do what we as humans love doing more than anything else—interact in person with other humans, and many of are now doing just that. There’s a whole beautiful world out there to explore, new people to meet, new cuisines to sample, and of course, great music to perform and experience.
Creative Fundraising
By Daniel Gregerman and Andrew Surmani
October 2023
This is a moment for music education funding. While we won’t go so far as to say that the war against the arts in education is over, it’s no longer making headlines the way it has in the past. There’s some budget money out there, but more importantly, a recognition of the value of the arts in education. That said, for many programs, fundraising is still needed, but a new, modern approach is in order. The world has changed since the bake sale reigned as the driver of the band trip. There are things that we, and our students don’t want to be doing. School admins are also conscious of all sorts of new societal norms and are more cautious when it comes to allowing certain activities.
Making Plans
By Andrew Surmani and Daniel Gregerman
December 2023
One of Benjamin Franklin’s greatest quotes from 1790 was, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” It still holds true to this day and especially in the world of student travel, where in the post-COVID world, the conditions for travel have changed dramatically.
As a director creating a trip, you will of course need a plan, and will be presenting that plan to many stakeholders. Depending on its scope and duration, those stakeholders can include students, parents, administrators, board members, fundraising companies, etc., each with a different perspective. A solid plan that anticipates those views, and includes concurrent contingencies will allow you to present it, and if needed defend it, as well as answer questions with the utmost confidence. As your proposal is formulated and your fundraising strategy is outlined, it is important to think of every question that could be asked from any stakeholders. Answering these in advance will make for better responses and a smoother approval process overall.
An Evolving Landscape
By Andrew Surmani and Daniel Gregerman
April 2024
The process of choosing repertoire can include selecting music for all styles of bands, choirs, and orchestras, as well as individual students performing as soloists, members of a pit band or a theatrical cast. This can include concert idioms, jazz band, marching band, method books, guitar and piano books, technique books, theory and
history books, and other classroom material. The process also involves reviewing all the materials that are sent out regularly by publishers and retailers featuring new music and best sellers from their catalogs. These days, consideration must also be given to music delivery, as most music available onlne, some with audio and scrolling scores. How directors make those final decisions, when and how often they order, and what styles to order, can vary from school district to school district and director to director. Today, there's also the matter of format; print or digital.
Mastering a Masters
By Andrew Surmani and Daniel Gregerman
October 2024
The music industry is in a constant state of evolution. And, when we refer to the “music industry” we are also including music education as a critical part. For most of us, at a minimum, we hope that a majority of our students go on to become great audience members and arts supporters who will keep the arts alive in schools and in our communities. However, we also have students who want to go on to be world class performers, music educators, composers and songwriters, DJs, producers and various other music industry professionals. In an ever changing world of new technology, including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, and Web 3.0, we are constantly being challenged as educators to keep up with the ever changing landscape. e alternative is becoming dinosaurs while our young students create incredible new content, get it out there to the masses via their social media channels as content creators and/or in uencers, and leave us behind. We must also realize that sitting in our classrooms could be the next inventor of a better way to listen to music, a better way forward for music publishing or to build and produce musical instruments and equipment. It’s a harsh way to look at the future, but we have to be realistic about upgrading our and con-tinually stay on top of the changes
